Abstrak

Improving data literacy has become an urgent necessity in higher education, particularly for scholarship recipients who are expected to maintain strong academic performance yet continue to face limitations in digital data-processing competencies. This community-engagement study aims to strengthen students’ abilities to use Microsoft Excel as a tool for data analysis and management through a practice-oriented training program. The activities were conducted face-to-face using a hands-on training approach, covering demonstrations of basic and intermediate functions, lookup features, Pivot Tables, as well as techniques for data cleaning and visualization. The results indicate a substantial improvement in participants’ mastery of various Excel features. Students not only demonstrated proficiency in applying basic formulas and IF logic, but also showed the ability to utilize text functions, conduct data searches using VLOOKUP and INDEX–MATCH, and construct Pivot Tables to summarize larger datasets. These findings suggest that practice-based instruction combined with relevant academic contexts plays a crucial role in accelerating technical comprehension. The discussion further shows that this training enriches the existing literature by highlighting students’ social and motivational factors as significant components of digital literacy success—an aspect rarely explored in prior studies. In conclusion, the training effectively enhanced students’ data literacy while offering theoretical contributions regarding the importance of contextual instructional design. Its practical implications encourage the integration of advanced training modules, particularly in data automation and advanced analytics. Future research is recommended to explore alternative pedagogical designs and employ quantitative evaluation to map the training impact more comprehensively.
